Police Officer Trainee

The Police Officer Trainee position is an entry level position, requiring no prior law enforcement experience. Applicants are required to possess a valid California Driver’s License, be a U.S. Citizen and be at least 21 years old at time of swear-in. All applicants must possess strong moral character, as well as good work ethic and maturity. 

The Police Officer Trainee is sponsored by Newark to attend a CA P.O.S.T. certified police academy. Trainees from out of the area are provided housing near the academy as well per diem meal allowance. Upon successful completion of the academy, the trainee will be eligible for appointment to the position of Police Officer.  New Police Officers will receive benefits available to regular employees and will serve an 18-month probationary period.

Police Officer Lateral & Academy Graduates

For well qualified officers, the Newark Police Department offers accelerated hiring and training programs, as well as numerous lateral entry incentives.  Our program is designed to recognize and reward your skills and experience, to include: $2500 academy reimbursement and $2500 for moving expenses. Well qualified laterals may receive elevated salary range, and may transfer 120 hours of vacation and 100 hours of sick leave to Newark upon hire. 

Police Dispatch

Under general supervision, the Public Safety Dispatcher receives emergency and non-emergency calls for service and dispatches police and fire units or other public safety personnel; performs data entry and other clerical duties; and performs related work as assigned.
